Firms Patterns of e‑Business Adoption: Evidence for the European Union‑27  pp47-56

Abstract

Research has shown that firms using e‑business achieve considerable returns through efficiency improvements, inventory reduction, sales increase, customer relationship enhancement, new market penetration, and ultimately financial returns. However, there is little systematic research in terms of e‑business adoption patterns in firms across countries and industries. This study addresses the research gap by analysing the pattern of e‑business adoption by firms across European Union (EU) members. For that, we used the survey data from 6,964 businesses in EU27 members (excluding Malta and Bulgaria). The choice of variables that we will use in our study is based on the technology‑organization‑environment (TOE) theory. In the TOE framework, three aspects may possibly influence e‑business adoption: technological context (technology readiness and technology integration), organizational context (firm size, expected benefits and barriers of e‑business and improved products or services or internal processes) and environmental context (internet penetration and competitive pressure). We performed a factor analysis (FA) of multi‑item indicators to evaluate the validity and to reduce the number of variables. We used the principal component technique with varimax rotation to extract four eigen‑value, which were all greater than one. The first four factors explain 72.4% of variance contained in the data. The four factors found are: expected benefits and obstacles of e‑business, internet penetration, technology readiness and technology integration. These factors are in accordance with the literature review. Afterwards, we performed a cluster analysis (CA) using variables obtained from the FA and the other variables were gathered directly (firm size, employees education, improved products or services or internal processes and competitive pressure) from the e‑Business W@tch survey. In the CA we used hierarchical and non hierarchical methods. We obtained four distinct groups of e‑business adoption. The pattern of these groups suggested that in the European context the most important factor to characterize e‑business adoption is the specific characteristics of the industry and is not the country to which the firms belong.

Abstract

The Internet and its World Wide Web service have reshaped the promotion of cultural and tourism products. Well designed and user adaptable e‑commerce websites improve business promotion as they attract more e‑visitors. Multilingualism, dynamic and thus frequently updated content, email communication and searching capabilities are crucial options of websites. In this paper we empirically build an evaluation methodology to assess the technologies and services of Greek e‑tourism and e‑cultural websites. The primary focus of our work is to evaluate the technical capability of tourism and cultural websites and to realize the available options offered to users. A number of tourism e‑commerce websites and e‑museums were randomly selected and their content and technologies were analyzed based on the methodology proposed. The results of this statistical examination are analyzed and discussed. The main conclusion is that although the reviewed websites are rich in multimedia content they need to support customers more efficiently by offering more services or by refining the offered e‑services.

Testing of a Model Evaluating e‑Government Portal Acceptance and Satisfaction  pp35-46

Abstract

e‑Government has the potential to improve public administration efficiency by increasing convenience, performance and accessibility of government information and service to users. But knowledge about e‑Government remains limited. To realize its potential, e‑Government needs to be grounded on in‑depth understanding of target users needs, perceptions and other factors influencing its uptake. This cross‑sectional study identifies and examines factors influencing e‑Government portal satisfaction and adoption by individual citizens in Macao, three years after its inauguration. It is an adaptation to the e‑Government context of a model developed for assessing e‑commerce websites. To understand the determinants of e‑government portal adoption, an integrated model of user satisfaction and technology acceptance is empirically tested. The integrated model involves four success factors: information quality, system quality, perceived effectiveness and social influence, which impact user satisfaction with the e‑Government website, influencing intention to reuse. Overall, the study proposes that user perceptions about the e‑Government portal influence user attitude towards the portal. An Internet survey collected data from 464 online users of Macao’s e‑government portal. The model was found to explain a large proportion of the variance in citizen’s intention to reuse the portal. The portal partially mediates the relationship between success factors and intention‑to‑reuse. The results provide evidence that Information Quality, System Quality and Social Influence (but not Perceived Effectiveness) are success factors influencing user satisfaction and adoption. It is recommended that portal management needs to ensure ease‑of‑use, currency and accuracy of the supplied information. Timely information updating is a major concern for the e‑Government portal in Macao. The content an e‑government portal that is perceived by users to be easier to navigate is likely to facilitate satisfaction and reuse. Finally, the importance of social influence justifies, managerial actions aimed at improving e‑Government portal acceptance by individual users and government employees.

Abstract

Small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) adopt Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on a global scale in order to derive the undeniable benefits accruing from their use. The critical question arising here is which SMEs benefit from the adoption of ICTs. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find out why some SMEs reap more benefits than others from the adoption of ICTs, and which factors determine the successful use of ICTs. This paper analyses the influence data from the adoption of ICT in the Greek SME sector. In particular, SMEs were asked to rate the influence on the improvements of existing production procedures, enhancement of productivity and reduction of labor costs from the adoption of ICT. The ordinal regression method was used to model the relationships between the ordinal outcome variables and the predictor variables concerning ICT‑Strategy (implementation of a specific strategy for the adoption and use of ICTs) and entrepreneurial knowledge‑experience on ICT. A joint methodology using a fully‑structured questionnaire and in‑depth interviews was selected as the primary research instrument in order to paint as broad a picture as possible of the issues surrounding the application of ICT. The three ordinal regression models indicate that predictor variables such as the presence of specific strategy and entrepreneurial knowledge on ICT are associated with the influence of the ICT‑usage. Furthermore, the results of the study reveal that strategy plays a major role in the adoption and the appropriate use of ICT by SMEs. In addition, the prior entrepreneurial experience‑knowledge of ICT was significantly associated with the ICT performance. Both variables provide strong evidence that the technology performance must be a result of rational planning and knowledge. This study makes a major contribution in two ways. Firstly, it has demonstrated how the strategy and entrepreneurship are inter‑related parts of the ICT adoption process. Secondly, the information and communication technologies make the difference and offer tangible and intangible benefits only if properly applied.

Abstract

Abstract: An academic group and discussion forum were established on Facebook for a cohort of postgraduate students studying Concepts and Principles of eLearning. The Forum had a constructivist, student‑centric ethos, in which students initiated discuss ion topics, while the course leader and administrator facilitated. In previous research, content analysis was undertaken of the discussions, but the present study evaluates the collaborative learning environment on Facebook, investigating social relations hips, study‑related pursuits and the balance between them, as well as considering whether the Group could be viewed as a Web 2.0 application. A literature review shows how social networking by students, initially social, began to overlap with academia, l eading to groups and forums for academic purposes. In mixed‑methods research, qualitative analysis was done on free‑text data to extract themes from students reflective essays and from an exam question, while heuristic evaluation was conducted by expert evaluators, who analysed forum discourse in line with contemporary learning theory and considered the social culture of participation. Findings of the qualitative analysis and results of the heuristic evaluation of forum participation confirmed each other , indicating a good social climate and a conducive, well‑facilitated environment. Inter‑personal relationships were fostered between distance learners, and academic value arose from independent research, peer‑learning and social negotiation. Facebook serv ed well as an environment for collaborative learning, but did not provide a full Web 2.0 environment for the collaborative generation of artifacts or projects.

Abstract

Abstract: For successful implementation of Activity Based Costing (ABC) information systems, like any other Accounting Information System (AIS), there are several key points to be considered. Several researchers have studied factors influencing succes s in various stages of Activity Based Costing Information Systems (ABCIS) development. However, a gap in the literature concerns a lack of research for the development of a taxonomy of heuristic principles for better implementation and successful utiliz ation of ABCISs. This paper offers a detailed analysis of ABCISs by: (i) reviewing literature studies in order to build a more exhaustive list of success factors of ABCIS. Twenty primary and twenty‑two secondary success factors are identified; and (ii ) running four rounds of grounded action research through interviews in a case study of a bank. Twenty‑seven heuristics for the successful implementation of ABCIS are derived. Finally, the paper demonstrates the extent to which each heuristic may address each main success factor. Implications of the results for researchers and practitioners are subsequently proposed.

Abstract

Abstract: The developments in ICT since the first computers were implemented have facilitated changes to society in a number of important ways. These changes have occurred steadily and have been accepted largely without discussion as to how they have impa cted the way our society functions. These developments in ICT and their resulting applications have been perceived as progress, but there has been little if any discussion as to what actually constitutes progress. Although ICT has delivered great benefits there is clearly some downside to the technology, which has not been adequately addressed and which deserves careful attention. In fact a review of papers in the Electronic Journal of IS Evaluation reveals no comment on this important subject and this st udy serves to fill a gap in the literature. This paper reports on the findings of an exploratory study which includes the results of a qualitative survey. The main objective of the paper is to review the impact of ICT on society by examining the benefits which have been facilitated by its implementation, while at the same time considering the challenges the technology offers. The paper concludes with a call for more awareness of how ICT is changing our society and for a more in depth discussion and deba te on what the implications are for society of the increasing and ubiquitous application of the technology.
