Abstract

E‑Commerce is a global trend and can be a viable source of economic reform in a nation. Nigeria, a third world country is leaving no stone unturned to make life easier and more comfortable in this electronic age. Though developed countries are on the verge of conducting e‑commerce securely and comfortably, Nigeria is absorbing techniques involved either by espionage, knowledge transfer or other means. Hence, the need for ensuring effectiveness, awareness among inhabitants, and security of resources involved must be taken into account. This paper highlights different levels of e‑commerce participation among banks, service providers and the public in Nigeria. A business‑inclined metropolitan suburb of Lagos was used as a case study to evaluate citizenry involvement and opinions. Recommendations on the most suitable payment method (s) for citizenry was made based on their opinions.

Abstract

The increasing number of Jordanian Internet users should naturally be reflected in e‑commerce conversions. However, this is not the case. While social‑media users in Jordan are becoming more engaged and involved in social‑media transactions, e‑commerce activities have not experienced a similar trend. This issue has been identified in the literature as the e‑commerce awareness paradox, wherein customers are partially aware but are not engaged. This points to a missing link between different levels of awareness and e‑commerce process engagement. This paper presents the results of research that has investigated and evaluated the awareness of e‑commerce among customers. In order to gain insight into customers’ awareness, data were collected from 386 participants. The data analysis identified that partial and full customer awareness are critical factors in the adoption and success of e‑commerce. Furthermore, four distinctive levels of awareness are identified, namely awareness of products and services (AOP/S), awareness of payment (AOP), awareness of delivery (AOD) and awareness of brand (AOB). This research contributes to the literature by providing a novel framework in which levels of awareness are mapped to four main processes of electronic commerce. The framework will be useful to e‑commerce practitioners as a basis to evaluate prospective customers’ levels of awareness, thereby to assist identifying precisely where they need to focus on the online acquisition journey.

Abstract

This paper derives a theoretical framework for consideration of both the technologically driven dimensions of mobile payment solutions, and the associated value proposition for customers. Banks promote traditional payment instruments whose value proposition is the management of risk for both consumers and merchants. These instruments are centralised, costly and lack decision support functionality. The ubiquity of the mobile phone has provided a decentralised platform for managing payment processes in a new way, but the value proposition for customers has yet to be elaborated clearly. This inertia has stalled the design of sustainable revenue models for a mobile payments ecosystem. Merchants and consumers in the meantime are being seduced by the convenience of on‑line and mobile payment solutions. Adopting the purchase and payment process as the unit of analysis, the current mobile payment landscape is reviewed with respect to the creation and consumption of customer value. From this analysis, a framework is derived juxtaposing customer value, related to what is being paid for, with payment integration, related to how payments are being made. The framework provides a theoretical and practical basis for considering the contribution of mobile technologies to the payment industry. The framework is then used to describe the components of a mobile payments pilot project being run on a trial population of 250 students on a campus in Ireland. In this manner, weaknesses in the value proposition for consumers and merchants were highlighted. Limitations of the framework as a research tool are also discussed.
