This paper highlights different levels of e-commerce participation among banks, service providers and the public in Nigeria. A business-inclined metropolitan suburb of Lagos was used as the case study to evaluate citizenry involvement and opinions. In the course of this research, a questionnaire was used to seek public opinion and analyze the present level of participation in e-commerce. The groups of people involved were scholars, businessmen, graduate and postgraduate students. Recommendations for the most suitable payment method (s) for citizenry was made based on their public opinions.
Indications showed that the preferred payment methods are prepaid/debit card system and direct payment to sellers’ accounts. Debit card payment methods and prepaid payment methods are synonymous since they require that the customer has sufficient money either in his account or by buying a card respectively. A one-stop solution is anticipated in the e-commerce in Nigeria and it was suggested that the public awareness of e-commerce should increase, emphasizing it as a means of increasing revenue without halting conventional or traditional sales.
